The knife set I bought for cooking school came with 12 different pieces. In addition to the knives, there were other things such as a thermometer, a ruler (yes, a ruler) and a tool that I had not seen in a kitchen until then: a metal spatula.

I had seen them on home remodeling and renovation jobs, but it hadn’t occurred to me that they might be of any use around the stove. And boy does it have it! To turn hot foods, cut dough and even scrape a stubborn stain on a frying pan.

The truth is that between moving and carelessness, one day I noticed that my spatula was gone. I searched, asked, searched each drawer and it did not appear. Resigned, I went to a kitchen supply store and when I found out the price, I knew that I would never have a kitchen spatula again.

But then I remembered where I had seen it before (remodels, renovations…) so I went to a hardware store and for a third of the price of the “kitchen” one I had my new spatula. And although she was born to be a plumber, I think she is happy with her new job destination.
