Mónica Oltra was the one who led the Valencian political change in 2015 to remove the PP from the institutions and establish, together with Ximo Puig, a government of all possible lefts, known as Botànic: PSPV, Compromís and Unides Podem (Esquerra Unida and Podemos ). With her resignation two years ago, due to her accusation, Compromís was left without leadership and Puig lost her best ally to combat harassment from the opposition and to mobilize the electorate to the left of the PSPV. Surely, with Oltra active, the reckless and clumsy war between Sumar and Podemos in its Valencian aspect would have been managed differently, without those Cainite stagings that discouraged some of the voters. She was one of the promoters of Yolanda Díaz’s project and had an excellent relationship with Pablo Iglesias.
Long before the case of her ex-husband’s sexual abuse of a minor became known, in this newspaper we already warned that the PP and Vox focused all their artillery against her, and they knew what they were doing. She was the piece to beat, because attacking her weakened the Botànic project, as confirmed on March 28, with the defeat of the left due to the electoral setback of Compromís and the transition to marginality of Unides Podem.
After her ex-husband was sentenced, Judge Vicente Ríos decided to accuse her of allegedly covering up the case and of having ignored the needs of the victim. In her accusation, the qualification of the chief prosecutor Teresa Gisbert, a progressive woman, who assessed that there were indications of guilt against the former vice president, was very important. However, the judge has now found “no crime” against her, an important fact. The political and media pressure from the right accelerated, it was overwhelming; but also from the PSOE and from the Government. She played against Oltra the judicial strategy of Compromís against the PP in the past due to corruption cases. In her own training she was encouraged to take a step back, convinced that without her there would be better electoral options. She was left alone, with worthy exceptions.
Believing that the harassment of Oltra was an issue only against her is a mistake; The objective was broader, it was always to defeat Botànic. She resigned, and an eternal investigation was initiated that has now been archived. It will be interesting to see if she wants to play a determining role again in a political space that, to this day, remains without leadership. Pay attention.
