Colombian singer Shakira will become the first Latin American artist to receive MTV’s Video Vanguard Award at its annual Video Music Awards ( MVA ), which will be held on September 12 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey ( U.S. united). During the gala, as announced on the public profile of the organizers, the 46-year-old artist will take the stage to perform live some of his most popular songs.

This recognition that Shakira will receive has previously been received by stars such as Madonna, David Bowie, The Beatles along with director Richard Lester, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez, among others, according to a statement from the MTV television network. “Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence with her singular prowess and musical talent. She is a point of reference for women all over the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music”, says Bruce Gillmer, head of music at Paramount, the company that owns MTV.

In addition, the singer could add during that night other awards to the long list of recognitions, since she is nominated in three categories: artist of the year, best collaboration for TQG with her compatriot Karol G and best Latin video, with double nomination for TQG and Acróstico.

The award for Shakira and the nominations add to a successful year for the Colombian star, who debuted as the first female singer to enter the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with a song in Spanish, her col ·collaboration with Argentinian Bizarrap, BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53, full of indirect references to his ex, Gerard Piqué, and repeated a month later with TQG.

Shakira has already received four VMA awards, the first in 2002 and 18 years after the first performance in Spanish at the VMS with the hit La tortura amb l’espanyol Alejandro Sanz.

The vocalist recently topped Billboard magazine’s Latin Pop Airplay Chart, a feat she had never achieved in the chart’s nearly three-decade history.

Added to this are 14 Guinness World Records with BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53 with the Argentinian producer. It blew away all brands on digital streaming platforms: it was the most played song on Spotify in 24 hours and the most listened to in a week, the most viewed song on YouTube in Spanish in 24 hours and it also reached the fastest 100 million plays.

In a year that has not been easy for her, since in the sentimental field she has had to struggle with a painful separation process with the father of her children, Milan and Sasha, she has been able to find joy in the professional field. Also, in May, she was declared woman of the year by Billboard.
