The former president of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemotn, has assured in a statement released on his social networks this Thursday that at this moment there are no ongoing negotiations on a possible amnesty, but he has announced that next Tuesday he will intervene in an act called in Parliament Council to expose “the framework that Junts will propose to everyone who is interested in opening negotiations with us”.
“There is no negotiation underway with anyone, nor has any amnesty project been presented to any political party nor, of course, has any decision been made in relation to the Consell per la República in relation to possible negotiations that may be undertaken,” he says in the notice. But he does admit that there are conversations that can in no way be interpreted as negotiations.
“For a long time there has been a desire to use the concept ‘dialogue’ as a synonym for ‘negotiation’, when they are two significantly different concepts”, differentiates the expresident. For Puigdemont, the dialogue “is prior to any negotiation”, but “it can serve to set the framework in which it can take place, or it can serve to verify that there is no room for negotiation”, he explains. In any case, whether or not there is room to negotiate the investiture of Pedro Sánchez “we will see it in the next few days”, he summons.
Puigdemont’s intentions are endorsed by his party. According to a statement from Junts, the executive of the formation met this Thursday morning in Altafulla to start the political course, in which “it has been agreed that President Puigdemont be the one who (…) make it public to the media of communication the framework that JxCat will propose to anyone who is interested in opening negotiations”.
As the former president points out on social networks, the Junts executive has also reiterated that there is “no negotiation underway with anyone, nor has any amnesty project been presented to any political party.” Thus, she calls “speculations that lead to erroneous conclusions” any information published to the contrary to date.
Puigdemont also defends the strategy of absolute discretion for these talks that until now has characterized his own attitude as that of the Junts group whose leadership meets in Altafulla without anticipating that they will issue any statement at the end of the meeting. However, this discretion gives rise to all kinds of speculation, as Puigdemont himself acknowledges in this statement.
“Our position right in the middle of all the political checkerboard entails a responsibility, above all before our voters and the Catalans, and that is why both the form and the substance matter. As we proposed not to speak either through intermediaries or through the media, it is inevitable that others do it for us and create fictions”.
