The expansion works of the Germans Trias and Pujol Hospital in Badalona have started this Wednesday. The works will result in the creation of another six operating rooms, distributed over two floors, which will be added to the current 20. There will also be improvements in the recovery and resuscitation areas with 20 and 16 critical beds, respectively; a new molecular pathology laboratory will be built; a new necropsy room; The emergency area will increase with 8 boxes, and a new coronary ICU area, with 8 boxes.

At the same time, it is planned to transform one of the current operating rooms into a hybrid one for cardiac surgery. All this has a cost of 30 million euros, financed by the Servei Català de Salut with European Next Generation funds.

The new building is expected to come into operation throughout 2024. They are the models of multipurpose blocks that were released during the covid-19 pandemic in 2021. The director of the center, Josep Maria Mòdol, ensures that the expansion of the surgical block will allow “increasing its endowment by 30%, with high-tech operating rooms, and therefore will imply a very significant improvement that will allow the structure to be adapted to the care needs”.

When these works are finished, it will be necessary to carry out a second phase of improvements in the existing operating rooms, the reorganization and improvement of the major outpatient surgery circuits and the spaces of the Reception Unit for surgical patients and the creation of a 3D, among other performances.
