These are some of the adjectives that describe the singer, dancer and actress María Jiménez, who died early this Thursday at the age of 73 in her home in Triana (Seville) and surrounded by her loved ones, according to her family. relatives in a statement sent to Europa Press.

“With deep sadness and pain in our hearts, we say goodbye to María Jiménez today, a woman loved and respected for her unwavering commitment to her family, friends and admirers. An indomitable spirit, an overwhelming personality, a strong and courageous woman who fought against all odds. adversities beyond imagination”, reads the letter signed by his son, Alejandro Jiménez.

Jiménez had an intense artistic career. In fifty years dedicated to music, she recorded twenty albums. It’s over, Sensación or Donde más duele are just some of her best-known songs.

She was also an icon of the fight against abuse, which she suffered firsthand during her tortuous relationship with the now deceased actor Pepe Sancho, father of her son Alejandro. She married him three times and he was her unconditional support after the sudden death of her first daughter Rocío, who died in a traffic accident.

The Andalusian woman said in several television interviews that her relationship with Sancho was “toxic” and that he “subjugated” her. “She had me completely annulled. He led a double life, because he shared a bed with another woman,” said the singer in an interview on RTVE’s Lazos de sangre.

María Jiménez has suffered from various illnesses. In 2013, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, from which the artist announced in 2016 that she had fully recovered. At the beginning of May 2019 she underwent surgery for colon cancer.

He reappeared in November 2022 at the presentation of the Foundation that bears his name to fight against sexist violence and promote the social integration of the LGTBI community. Its director will be his son Alejandro.

On an extra-musical level, the singer founded the María Jiménez Foundation in 2022 to fight against sexist violence based on her own personal experience and with the aim of being a refuge space for women victims of abuse.
