The Mossos d’Esquadra arrested this morning in Barcelona the man accused of raping a homeless woman in Girona on September 2. Victim and aggressor knew each other from having met in shelters and sleeping on the street.

The events, reported today by Diari de Girona, occurred on September 2 at around 9 p.m. in the Jardins de la Francesa, located in the heart of Barri Vell. The victim, 45 years old, had spent the night in this space for days and went to the La Sopa shelter to ask for food.

When she left there, the alleged attacker, who is also a user of this center that serves homeless people, began to scold her and followed her to the Jardins de la Francesa, where the sexual assault took place.

The man violently threw her to the ground and tried to drown her several times while raping her, according to sources close to the case. Subsequently, the victim went to ask for help from La Sopa security personnel, who assisted her at first.

The medical examination carried out at the Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona and the forensic examination determined that the vaginal injuries corresponded to what the woman had reported.

The victim reportedly told the head of the Court of Instruction 3 of Girona that is handling the case that the suspect has a tendency to touch women with various excuses and that a few months ago he punched her several times, although she did not report the incidents.

The 39-year-old man was arrested this morning, around 7:35 a.m. in the Batteries passage of the Catalan capital after being identified by a Mossos d’Esquadra patrol.
