In Spain there is a points-based driving license, a system that determines that every driver has a specific number of points associated with their license. Their function is to reflect how many violations of the regulations have been committed by said driver. Each of them, depending on their severity, will be reflected in this amount through a subtraction. If the case occurs in which the number of points on the driving license reaches zero, due to having received several penalties, that driving license will lose its validity. Therefore, if some violations have been committed, it is advisable to find out how many driving license points you currently have.
From the official website of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) they clarify that this system takes in common all the possible driving licenses that a person possesses. That is, it is not associated with any of them specifically. Therefore, if all points are lost, that individual will not be able to drive any type of vehicle.
The driving license has a balance of 12 points, although those who are new drivers and those who have recently recovered it will only have 8 points. To find out how many of them you have, there are several possible ways, one of them is through Cl@ve, through the username and password, thanks to the miDGT application or in person.
If you want to do this procedure through the Internet, it will be as simple as accessing it using the certificate, the Cl@ve system or with a username and password. Very similar to doing it from the official DGT application, miDGT, which is available for both Android devices and the iOS operating system. To check this information in person, you can visit any Traffic Headquarters or Office, always requesting an appointment online or by calling 060 in advance.
The cost of this procedure is completely free. However, this does not happen if a points certificate is needed, since the price of the fee will be 8.67 euros. Furthermore, this can only be obtained through electronic registration or in person.
There are multiple infractions that will result in the subtraction of points from the driving license, in addition to being accompanied by a large financial penalty. However, some of them are especially high, resulting in the loss of 6 points on the license if they are committed.
