The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has awarded the works to bury the Renfe Cercanías line R2 in Montcada i Reixac (in Vallès Occidental, Barcelona). The package includes the construction of the new station in that municipality.

The work will be carried out by the joint venture made up of Comsa-FCC-Ferrovial and has a budget of 540 million euros.

The integration of the tracks will mean an “unprecedented” urban and railway transformation, according to the Ministry, given the “technical and constructive diversity and complexity.” The mayor of Moncada i Reixac, Bartolo Egea, was pleased with the news and stated that the action will involve the elimination of the two level crossings and will increase “safety for pedestrians and vehicles.”

Egea has also defended that the burying of the tracks will lead to the permeability of the R2 railway infrastructure, “which will facilitate integration between the different neighborhoods.” The work will represent, he added, “the great transformation of our city.”

The work includes the construction of a four-kilometer tunnel through which the R2 line tracks will pass. A third way will also pass to expand the capacity and resilience of the system.

The new station will also be buried and the accesses will be integrated into the new development of the suspended section. Likewise, the Ministry emphasizes that the project will configure future exploitation schemes of the local railway network in the area of ??Barcelona and the metropolitan area.

The burial will begin at the height of the Can Sant Joan neighborhood and will sink up to 35 meters, with a tunnel that will pass under an aquifer and the station will be located near the current station.

The new layout was calculated with parameters suitable for traffic of up to 140 kilometers per hour and maximum ramps of 3%.

Apart from the integration of the railway in the municipality, the Ministry has awarded the remodeling works of the Montcada Bifurcació station for 30.2 million euros. This work will be carried out by the joint venture made up of Dragados and Tecsa Empresa Constructora.

The objective of this action is to increase the capacity of the infrastructure of lines R3, R4, R7 and R12, which circulate through the station. The project will provide the facilities with full accessibility by removing architectural barriers with a new underpass, the remodeling of platforms and the construction of elevators.
