Pep Guardiola assured after making history by making Manchester City the first team to win four consecutive editions of the Premier League, that he is “closer” to leaving than to staying after next season.
“The reality is that I am closer to leaving than staying. We have spoken with the club, I have the feeling that now I want to stay. I will stay next season and during the season we will talk,” said the Santpedor coach who arrived in Manchester in 2017 and has been on the City bench for eight seasons. Guardiola made it clear that he will fulfill his contract that expires in June 2025. But what happens beyond that is unknown.
Guardiola gave the keys to success to once again dominate the Premier League and leave Arsenal with honey on their lips on the last day, after a great end to the season. “I don’t know the secret. I work a lot. I respect them a lot. Being humble, an incredible work ethic. One match, one match, one match: you cannot think in November that you are going to win it,” he reflected.
And he highlighted the way in which his team has adapted to playing with a number 9 like Erling Haaland. “The sporting director gives me these players and I think, ok, what is the best position for them? We cannot play with a false nine with Haaland, we adapt his skills to the rest of the players. It’s not like I have an idea and every player has to do it. “We adapt to the players.”
Guardiola ended up praising the Premier League signed by Phil Foden, author of a double on the last day. “We were without Haaland for many months and Julián Álvarez did an incredible job and Phil Foden has that talent. On the big stage, he in the big moment he did it. Incredible players, but with Phil we have something extra,” he said.
After once again dominating the Premier League, the coach continues with his roadmap, which takes him to Wembley and a new FA Cup final against his eternal citizen rival, Manchester United. To date Guardiola has won 17 titles. Six Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, four League Cups, two Community Shields, one Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup and one Club World Cup.
