The King has entrusted the new attempt to form the Government to Pedro Sánchez given “the willingness to be a candidate in a new investiture process of the representative of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party.” In this way, the crown resolves the appointment of Pedro Sánchez in this second attempt even though the socialist leader does not have, at least today, the sufficient number of votes to be able to achieve the majority in the investiture.

On August 22, the King designated Alberto Núñez Feijóo as a candidate, arguing that political tradition leads to designating as a candidate for the investiture the party that has obtained the most votes and in his statement he recalled that the Popular Party had been the one that had obtained greater support at the polls.

However, Feijóo – as confirmed last week in Congress – did not have sufficient support to achieve the presidency, which did not prevent Felipe VI from entrusting him with the attempt to form the Government because, as he could see in that first round of conversations there was not “a sufficient majority for the investiture” that would prevent Feijóo from trying to do so as the party with the most votes.

Now, Sánchez faces a similar situation and with the same expectation – that he will eventually be able to gather the necessary support – the King has entrusted him with the task of forming a Government.

The decision has been disciplinedly accepted by all parliamentary groups, which has not prevented debate on social networks about the convenience of this decision.
