The president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, yesterday raised the tone of the island’s claims in relation to the possibility that the support of the Canary Coalition will ultimately be decisive for Pedro Sánchez to be sworn in as president. The Canarian nationalists tighten the rope and warn that the favorable vote of the only deputy they have in Congress, Cristina Valido, will not be free.
The increase in the arrival of immigrants to the islands of the archipelago – and the string of victims and missing in those crossings – is once again the battle horse and the main demand of the Canarian nationalist formation.
Despite the fact that it is closer ideologically to the PP, with which it governs the islands, than to the PSOE, and that it was one of Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s supports in his failed investiture, for months Coalició Canària has been immersed in a double play on the right and on the left.
On the one hand, his deputy Cristina Valido is open to supporting the investiture of Pedro Sánchez as long as the demands and the Canary agenda are met despite the amnesty. On the other hand, the president of the Canary Islands Government and general secretary of CC, Fernando Clavijo, distrusts Sánchez, and questions the future support of his party because “it is difficult to trust someone who does not comply”, as this pointed out week
The accumulation of pastoralists who have experienced the islands in the last 48 hours, with the arrival of more than 1,000 people, lead Clavijo to “raise his voice again” and to criticize Sánchez’s “reluctance” towards the islands.
On Monday alone, almost 400 people arrived in seven boats on the island of Lanzarote, whose reception center collapsed. In order to attend to the immigrants, tents and temporary bathrooms had to be installed at the Puerto Naos pier, where the immigrants spent the night. In addition, seven immigrants from one of the boats that arrived on the island died on the Canarian migratory route on Monday, after the tire in which they were traveling overturned just 78 kilometers from Lanzarote. Yesterday was also an intense day for the arrival of immigrants: almost 600 people arrived on the islands of El Hierro – one of the three shepherds that arrived did so with 280 people – and Fuerteventura, the reception centers of which are at the limit. It is true that the Canaries Plan has been operational on the islands since 2021 and that the immigrants who arrive are referred to the Peninsula within a month or a month and a half, which allows a high turnover of the 4,000 reception places that the Ministry of Inclusion is distributed in all the islands and a relief for the centres. However, when there is a massive arrival, such as this week, the centers collapse.
Another added problem is the more than 2,900 unaccompanied minor immigrants that the Government of the Canary Islands looks after at an additional cost to its accounts of 14 million euros. This year, only 370 minors have been referred to other autonomous communities, and the Canary Islands require a rule with the rank of law that obliges a proportional distribution of these minors.
“Beyond the expansion of the reception centers, we do not have any kind of response from Sumar, specifically from the acting Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, who must transfer the funds for the guardianship of unaccompanied minors , nor from any other ministry”, indicated yesterday Clavijo, who insists on the need to create a single command to which the Government of the Canary Islands can address to deal with the migratory phenomenon. There are currently six ministries involved and with three of which the Regional Executive has not had any kind of dialogue during the three months that have seen an increase in migration, which ended today with the arrival of more than 15,500 people on the islands .
