“From the anger and admiration” that Shakespeare’s work provokes, Sergi Belbel has wanted to understand the words of the Prince of Denmark and for this reason proposes a revision of the first act, Hamlet.01, performed by Enric Cambray in La library
“It’s an experiment that starts from the fascination with Shakespeare and then with Hamlet – declares the playwright and theater director Sergi Belbel – I don’t understand his first monologue, in all the productions I’ve seen the same thing happens to me . Because it’s not a video, you can pause it, and it’s not a book, you can read it again.”
“From this dramatist rage is born the need to understand Hamlet’s lines one hundred percent, and with the admiration for Henry, I have written a first act where the actor considers the role of Hamlet”, adds the playwright.
Belbel admits that he didn’t know if “this birth” could be done anywhere, but Mercè Managuerra let them do it at Dau al Sec, and since then it has been a celebrated assembly wherever it has been done. Cambray declares: “People are enjoying Belbel the dramatist again and I say, though he doesn’t like me to say it, that it is his dramaturgical testament.”
The result is a dazzling piece, where the text and interpretation shine at every turn. Belbel has poured all his dramaturgical wisdom into it and Cambray unfolds all the possible registers that an actor can expose during two hours that fly by, in a fast-paced journey.
Hamlet.01 starts from the first act of the Shakespearean drama, so more will come – one for each act. The first now arrives at the theater of La Biblioteca, opening the season with another monologue, Papers of the War, the story of Pepe Castells and Pubill, performed by Pau Vinyals.
