The scooter was born as an economical vehicle at a time, the post-war period of 1945, when in Europe devastated after the war there was no room for sophistication and mere survival prevailed. But with the passing of the decades and the popularization of the concept, the scooter has in some cases even become a status symbol.

The brands – always attentive to the tastes of the market – have acted accordingly and brought to the streets more and more technological models, more and more powerful, more and more finished, more and more beautiful… and more and more expensive.

However, there is still a non-negligible number of users who are looking for precisely the opposite and prefer economical and simple models, with completely conventional technology, for which there is no need to worry beyond putting gas in them and whose price is the main purchase argument.

Surprisingly, they are not best sellers. In our country, the majority of customers who enter a dealership – if they can choose – end up taking the mid-range versions. However, despite this, all brands continue to maintain some “basic” model in their catalogue. And the good news is that – thanks to that – in our market, today, it is possible to get a great 125 scooter for just over 2,000 euros.

Another very important caveat to make is that the fact that a scooter is cheap does not necessarily mean that it is bad. In some cases the low price is usually determined by using already known designs, engines with conventional technology, air cooling, no electronics, analog equipment, bulb optics, braking without ABS – but equally functional – and by not having to sustain a large dealer network.

In other cases, these are latest generation models to which standard equipment is fitted precisely for those customers who want a model from that brand but are looking for something more economical.

All the models reviewed below and listed in alphabetical order comply with the Euro 5 regulations and can, of course, be driven with a car license under the conditions provided by law; three years of license and power limited to 15 HP.
