In politics, absolute truths are short-lived. Less and less. Yesterday’s enemies will embrace tomorrow if the circumstances demand it. Ethics is more obsolete than SMS. Shame has ceased to be quoted in the Ibex and in our lives. But let’s be alert because when values ??go out the door, dignity goes out the window. And societies become jungles condemned to a thousand dangers.

Look at the case of Argentina, where a guy with a chainsaw in his hand was asking for the vote to preside over the country. He soon became an idol of the masses. In his meetings, he not only raised the radial marching to cut off heads, but also his sets were illustrated with gore cinema images. Javier Milei has been able to dazzle millions of Argentines, but at the moment not as many as he needed to win in the first round, since he was almost seven points behind the Peronist Sergio Massa. But it has been a mass phenomenon, to which the world has looked with as much curiosity as bewilderment.

His electoral program was a nonsense that involved dollarizing the economy, repealing abortion, promulgating the free sale of weapons or authorizing the sale of organs. His language was devastating, as he treated his rivals as thieves and murderers. But that has changed now that he needs the votes of Conservative Patricia Bullrich, who came third on Sunday. He said during the campaign that she was a terrorist who had planted bombs in kindergartens, but on Monday he described her as an excellent minister who he would like to join his government.

In Spanish, there is an expression that defines these changes in attitude which, at the very least, are an exercise in cynicism: a la fuerza ahorcan. It is a phrase that means that sometimes circumstances force us to do something that we would not otherwise do. In Catalan there are two versions, one that is almost verbatim (perforce les pengen) and another more literary (perforce van galeras). We will see if they also ultimately serve to define the investiture agreement of the Spanish Government with independence.
