Since Alberto Núñez Feijóo endorsed Alejandro Fernández’s candidacy in Barcelona on March 27, the president of the PP has made clear the importance he gives to the Catalan campaign. Today, from Lleida, he has defended the need to return to centrism in Catalan politics, the recovery of a political space that allows, he said, “to solve citizens’ problems and not cause them, which allows us to focus on management.”
It was his third visit to Catalonia in this pre-campaign that the PP started on March 27, and Feijóo has outlined a speech with two lines that he wants to converge. On the one hand, he has denounced the “total lack of respect” of the Government towards the problems of Catalonia, together with the “inaction and apathy” of the management of the nationalist governments of the Generalitat. He has placed the focus, from Lleida and after visiting the d’Ivars d’ Urgell cooperative with the candidate, on the Government’s “lack of investment” in water infrastructure, pointing out that 700 million euros have been left unexecuted. And, likewise, he has denounced the disinterest of Moncloa in the face of the main problem in Catalonia today, which is the drought.
In this sense, the popular leader has considered that it is not the problems of Catalonia that generate nationalism but that it is precisely “nationalism” that generates the difficulties that Catalan society faces. In this commitment to the need for Catalan politics to recover centrism, he has offered a political project that “will not incite confrontation but rather unity.” Feijóo has asked for the support of those who prefer “open and not closed” ideologies, has defended the construction of a “cosmopolitan” Catalonia and has pointed out that the PP is a party that represents “diversity.” He has thus addressed those who “want to turn the page on the process and focus on the real problems”
In the appearance before the media, the popular leader also referred to the support of the CJEU lawyer for Carles Puigdemont’s appeal to be recognized as a deputy. “I congratulate – he said – all those who have favorable resolutions and I hope that they also submit to the resolutions of other courts even if they are not favorable to them.”
