The downturn of the pandemic is falling further and further behind in the performing arts sector in Catalonia, as attested by the data published this Tuesday in Barcelona by the Anuari Sgae 2023 of scenic, musical and audiovisual arts, which reflects an increase in almost all variables, although they have not yet recovered the 2019 figures with the exception of popular music, which exceeded pre-pandemic income by 13.5%. In total, live arts raised 83.8% more compared to 2021, attendance rose 76% and supply rose 23.8%. “The data for 2022 demonstrate a practical recovery in the theatrical offer but the audience needs to be recovered,” highlighted Luis Gómez, director of Member Experience at the SGAE and director of the SGAE in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The figures are equally positive in classical music, with increases of 21.6% in concerts, 72% in attendance and 78.9% in collections. In the Catalan case, the values ??increase even more (39.1% in supply, 135.7% in attendance and 128.8% in collection), but in both markets they continue to be below 2019, with around 22% less than offer, a 47.5% drop in attendance and around 37.5% in collection.

Streaming is king in this category, with the physical format in constant decline with the exception of indestructible vinyl. According to data from Promusicae, revenue in 2022 was 461.99 million euros, 12.4% more than the previous year, concentrated in the digital market, which represents 85.9% of the total with a growth of 13 .6%. Theater maintains its preponderance in this section, accounting for 94.2% of the offer in both Catalonia and Spain, and Madrid is the autonomous community with the most offer, spectators and revenue, only surpassed by Catalonia except in the number of dance attendees. , opera and zarzuela. Overall, the Catalan market accounts for 21.5% of the supply, 17.5% of the attendance and 20.9% of the collection.

Movie theaters remain on the path of recovery, although still far from the numbers recorded in 2019. The number of sessions grew by 35.5%, attendance increased by 44.2% and receipts by 47.9%, figures very similar to those of Catalonia. Compared to pre-pandemic figures, sessions fell by 16.4%, viewers by 43.3% and revenue by 40.2%.

The annual average of tickets purchased per person in Spain was 1.24, with Madrid topping the table with 1.64, Catalonia with 1.46 and the Valencian Community with 1.44. In the Catalan case, the province of Barcelona was the one that recorded the highest average number of tickets sold per person, 1.5, and also the one that had the highest average ticket price (6.71 euros).
