The three opposition parties in the Premià de Mar City Council (Maresme) have issued a press release critical of the decision of the mayor, Rafa Navarro (Junts), to “postpone” the events of November 25, the date on which The International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women is commemorated, to take advantage of another “reinauguration” event of a municipal business center. Navarro justifies that the date change has been carried out to give greater relevance to the event.

PSC-CP, Crida Premianenca and Premià en Comú Podem assure that November 25 is the day designated and dedicated to denouncing violence against women and demanding policies to put an end to it. He criticizes that, except in Premià, this day is celebrated all over the world and is postponed “to give priority to a reopening ceremony of the Municipal Business Centre.” A fact that responds to “the lack of sensitivity of the mayor” who also holds the Department of Equality. For all these reasons, they announce that they will not participate in next Sunday’s events “to show our disagreement with the unilateral decision” to postpone “such an important day.”

For Rafa Navarro, the most important thing “is to work for equality and against violence against women 365 days a year and not just one day.” Hence, “activities have been held throughout the week” and the decision was made to move the main event from 25-N to Sunday “to generate an activity for all families” during peak hours and diffusion. “We want to give it the relevance it deserves” once it was observed that in previous editions “there were more public councilors.”

The fact that the mayor assumes the equality department, for Rafa Navarro, is proof “of the real will to promote a powerful and transversal department.” The first mayor of Premion is surprised that “it is the PSC that leads the proposal, when for the last four years he has led the Igualtat council” which focused on “celebrating a day.” He also considers that “it was far from being a model council.” The councilor regrets that the socialists “instead of making self-criticism of what they have not done for four years” want to generate controversy over an “anecdotal fact,” he concluded.
