Arizona Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Transporting Teens for Prostitution

An Arizona man has been handed a 10-year prison sentence for his role in transporting three teenagers to San Diego for prostitution, revealed the Department of Justice on Friday.

Clifford Stokes Jr., a 23-year-old from Tempe, Arizona, was sentenced in federal court by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California for transporting a 19-year-old woman and two 16-year-old girls from Arizona to San Diego to engage in prostitution.

The incident took place in January 2023, with one of the victims being reported missing from Arizona. San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force officers noticed Stokes letting two of the victims out of his car, after which the women were observed walking the streets and attempting to flag down passing vehicles.

Upon Stokes’ return to pick the women up, the task force took action and pulled him over. A loaded firearm was found in his possession, and one of the victims disclosed to officers the coercion she faced, stating that Stokes had used violence and threats to force her to earn $1,000 a day through commercial sex acts for his own financial gain.

Following identification of the victims, they were safely reunited with their families in Arizona with the assistance of Child Welfare Services. U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath emphasized the severity of human trafficking crimes, noting the long and arduous road to recovery that the young girls must now navigate.

Ensuring Justice and Accountability

Attorney General Bonta highlighted the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions, particularly in cases of exploitation involving the youth. The sentencing of Stokes serves as a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated, with a commitment to safeguarding communities from such exploitation.

The collaborative efforts of the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, San Diego Police Department, San Diego Sheriff’s Office, and California Highway Patrol were instrumental in bringing Stokes to justice and ensuring the safety and well-being of the victims.

Empowering Communities Against Exploitation

Instances of human trafficking serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerability faced by individuals, particularly young girls and women, in our society. Education and awareness play a crucial role in empowering communities to recognize the signs of exploitation and take action to prevent such crimes from occurring.

By fostering a culture of vigilance and support, individuals can become advocates for those at risk and work towards creating safer environments for all members of society. Community engagement and collaboration with law enforcement agencies are key components in combating human trafficking and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice.

Through concerted efforts and a united front against exploitation, communities can strive towards a future where individuals are protected from harm and empowered to live free from the threat of violence and coercion.

Building Resilience and Support

Recovery from the trauma of human trafficking is a complex and challenging journey, requiring a comprehensive support system and access to specialized services. Organizations and agencies dedicated to assisting survivors play a vital role in providing holistic care and rehabilitation for those affected by exploitation.

By offering trauma-informed care, mental health support, and resources for economic empowerment, survivors of human trafficking can begin the process of healing and rebuilding their lives. Community support networks and advocacy groups further contribute to creating a supportive environment where survivors can find solidarity and empowerment.

As we work towards eradicating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation, it is essential to prioritize the well-being and recovery of survivors, ensuring they have the necessary resources and support to rebuild their lives and reclaim their autonomy.
