Albany, N.Y. – It has been nearly three years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and local organizations in support of the country came together on Saturday for a festive celebration of Ukrainian culture and a show of solidarity in the ongoing conflict. Hosted by the Capital District branch of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) at the Polish Community Center in Albany, the festival drew hundreds of attendees eager to immerse themselves in the rich traditions and heritage of Ukraine.

The event featured a vibrant showcase of traditional foods, crafts, and artists, offering a glimpse into the unique cultural tapestry of Ukraine. Attendees were treated to performances by folk dancers, singers, and bands, including the renowned Ukrainian orchestra Volya and the Syzokryli Dance Ensemble. Festivities kicked off at 12 p.m. and continued until 6 p.m., culminating in a lively dance with live music from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The festival not only served as a platform to celebrate Ukrainian culture but also as an opportunity to raise funds for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the festival and engage with the community to share their initiatives and shed light on the current situation in Ukraine.

Supporting Ukraine: Organizations Making a Difference

The festival brought together a diverse array of organizations dedicated to providing aid and support to Ukraine during this challenging time. Among them was the Foundation for the International Legion, which works to raise awareness about the international legion battalions made up of soldiers from 52 nations, including hundreds of Americans, who are actively serving in Ukraine’s army forces. Malcolm Nance, a representative of the organization, emphasized the critical role these soldiers play in the conflict and the need to support them in their efforts.

Revived Soldiers Ukraine, a U.S. charity that offers medical aid to wounded Ukrainian soldiers and delivers essential supplies and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, was also present at the festival. Three soldiers from the program shared their harrowing stories of combat and the injuries they sustained during the war. Mykola Melnyk, Senior Lt. and Commander of the 4th Company of the 47th Brigade, recounted a particularly intense battle where he lost his right leg to enemy fire, underscoring the sacrifices made by Ukrainian soldiers in defense of their country.
