Crews quickly responded to a vegetation fire in the Mountain Empire area of southeastern San Diego County on Sunday afternoon. The fire, located on Cameron Truck Trail in Campo, was reported to be 2 acres in size with a slow rate of spread at 12:30 p.m. Despite the manageable size, fire officials cautioned that it had the potential to grow to 100 acres.
Fortunately, by 1:02 p.m., fixed-wing aircraft had been deployed to assist in firefighting efforts, and just 20 minutes later, the forward progress of the fire had been halted at 2 acres. Crews remained on the scene for the rest of the afternoon to reinforce control lines and extinguish any remaining hotspots.
The timing of this fire is particularly concerning as it comes on the heels of an Excessive Heat Warning that affected parts of the region the day before. While the warning has since expired, Cal Fire Capt. Thomas Shoots emphasized that peak wildfire season has arrived in Southern California.
